Your Wildlife Pros have been controlling and removing pigeons in Virginia since 1998 using Bird Barrier® America products.

Virginia Pigeon RemovalYour Wildlife Pro will design a pigeon control or removal program that best fits your needs, project specifications, architectural plans, and most importantly your budget. Understanding a pigeon's biology or behavioral patterns, size, and reproductive rates is the most important factor in determining the proper bird control product to use. Some bird control products are species-specific, while others can deter a range of species. We prefer to use the product that will deter pigeons, as well as, other species of birds that may move in after the pigeons are removed. Pigeons are not protected in Virginia or by the federal government, which means we can remove the pigeons and their nests at any time of the year.

Pigeon Problems & Identification
Feral pigeons are the number one urban pest bird, creating a mess and causing damage where they roost, creating a need for pigeon control. Pigeons are descendants of domesticated European homing pigeons, so they have a varied diet and feel at ease making their homes in man-made structures. Generally blue-grey in color, with iridescent feathers on the head and neck, problem pigeons often have markings in black, white or brown on the wings and neck. A short neck and small head characterize the standard pigeon; their short legs, hind toes and level front allow for both easy perching on pipes and ledges or walking on flat surfaces. Pigeons generally nest in small, flat areas away from the ground such as building ledges, air conditioning units or window sills. Occasionally pigeons may even lay eggs directly on a protected ledge.

Damage Caused by Pigeon Problems
Virginia pigeon ControlPigeon control is important due to the damage and disease problems these problem birds often create. The uric acid in pigeon feces is highly corrosive and can cause extensive damage to metals and other substrates it sits on for long periods. Debris from flocks of problem pigeons often build up, backing up gutters and drains which can cause flooding and roof damage. Nesting materials and other debris has caused failures in machinery, especially rooftop air conditioning units which are a prime nesting spot for pigeons. Other frequent pigeon problems include slip and fall liability from feces or debris, plus an unclean, dirty company image. The bacteria, fungal agents and ectoparasites found in pigeon droppings are responsible for a host of serious diseases, including histoplasmosis, encephalitis, salmonella, meningitis, toxoplasmosis and more. Many companies also retain significant clean up costs due to the pigeon problems they don't resolve.

Pigeon Control Products
Virginia Pigeon Bird NettingThe best pigeon control product is 3/4” StealthNet® bird netting. Bird net is extremely durable and creates a true bird barrier against problem pigeons "homing" to their natural instinct to stay near their birth site. Pigeon netting completely controls pigeon problems, forcing the problem pigeons to look elsewhere for a nesting site.  Never underestimate the commitment of pest pigeons to return to their home.

In addition to bird net, other effective pigeon control products are Shock-Track® Flex-Track®, Birdwire®, BirdSlide®, and BirdSpikes ledge products. These pigeon control products work best where pigeons are nesting or roosting and the pigeons are "homing" (committed to remaining at the site). For pigeon problem areas where the birds are not nesting or feeding, ledge pigeon control products such as low-profile Shock-Track® Flex-Track® or Birdwire®, and pigeon traps can be effective pigeon control methods. However, trapping or other kinds of flock dispersal will not work in situations where these pest pigeons are nesting or when there are food or water sources present as these birds will be especially determined to remain and shooting may be the only solution.  Our staff has trained NWCOA® Certified Urban Sharpshooters that can eliminate most pigeon problems in a couple nights.

Your Wildlife Pros, can design a pigeon control, pigeon removal, get rid of pigeons, or a pigeon trapping program along with Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® Birdwire® BirdSlide® Shock Track® Flex Track® to remove pest pigeons in the counties, cities and towns of Alexandria, Arlington, Bedford, Blacksburg, Bristol, Charlottesville, Covington, Chesapeake, Danville, DC, District of Columbia, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Loudon, Manassas, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton, Virginia Beach, Washington D.C., Waynesboro, Williamsburg, Winchester, Wytheville, and Yorktown Virginia.  Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® Birdwire® BirdSlide® Shock Track® Flex Track® is easily customized to exclude problem pigeons while accommodating demanding architectural specifications. Your Wildlife Pros have been controlling and removing sparrows in Virginia since 1998 using Bird Barrier® America products.

Virginia Sparrow removalYour Wildlife Pro will design a sparrow control or removal program that best fits your needs, project specifications, architectural plans, and most importantly your budget. Understanding a sparrow's biology or behavioral patterns, size, and reproductive rates are the most important factors in determining the proper bird control product to use. Some bird control products are species-specific, while others can deter a range of species. We prefer to use the product that will deter sparrows, as well as, other species of birds that may move in after the sparrows are removed. Sparrows are not protected in Virginia or by the federal government, which means that we can remove the sparrows and their nests at any time of the year.

Sparrow Identification:
Sparrows are an increasingly common problem bird in urban areas of Virginia. These small, quick, intelligent pest birds are predominately brown and grey in color, with black striping around the eyes and neck in the male of the species. Sparrow legs and toes favor branch and wire perching and their short conical bills are ideal for cracking seeds and grain. Sparrows are very adaptable cavity nesters and have learned to nest in our structures and eat our scrap food. Sparrows often gather in huge flocks to feed and roost, aggressively forcing other birds out of their territories. Sparrows prefer nesting in small enclosed places such as house shutters, drainage piping, loading dock rafters, ceiling/wall insulation inside industrial buildings, and corrugated metal siding. These pest birds average about 20 offspring a year, allowing their numbers to increase rapidly to infestation levels.

Damage Caused by Sparrows:
Sparrows are noisy problem birds, especially when they congregate in large flocks. Besides the annoying noise factor, sparrow problems are often found in manufacturing and food processing plants. These areas are particularly appealing to sparrows for their variety of nesting and feeding sites. Sparrow nests cause flooding from backups in gutters and drainage pipes, as well as clog machinery and even start fires from nesting materials in machinery housings. Sparrow droppings contain uric acid which is highly corrosive and can cause extensive damage to metals and other substrates it lands on for long periods of time. In addition, the bacteria, fungal agents and ectoparasites found in sparrow droppings and nesting materials are responsible for a host of serious diseases, including histoplasmosis, encephalitis, salmonella, meningitis, toxoplasmosis and more. If ignored, significant clean up and maintenance costs will increase due to lack of sparrow control.

Sparrow Control:
Virginia Bird netting for SparrowsThe best sparrow control product is 3/4” StealthNet® bird netting. StealthNet® bird net is extremely durable and creates a true bird barrier against sparrow problems. Bird netting permanently resolves sparrows problems, keeping these pest birds completely away from the area.

In addition to StealthNet®, another effective sparrow control product is Shock Track® Flex Track®. This is particularly useful for sparrow control on building ledges. It emits a memorable electrical shock when the sparrow lands on it and they will not return.  Sparrows do not react to bird scare products, but sparrow traps are a viable option for controlling small quantities of sparrow problems in stores. A nest removal program should be implemented along with trapping and shooting for long-term effectiveness to get rid of sparrows. A new technique for sparrow bird control that has found some success is fogging with methyl anthranilate, a grape extract that reacts with the birds olfactory sense like pepper spray.

Your Wildlife Pro can design a sparrow control, sparrow removal, get rid of sparrows, or a sparrow trapping program along with Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® BirdSlide® Shock Track® Flex Track® to remove pest sparrows in the counties, cities and towns of Alexandria, Arlington, Bedford, Blacksburg, Bristol, Charlottesville, Covington, Chesapeake, Danville, DC, District of Columbia, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Loudon, Manassas, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton, Virginia Beach, Washington D.C., Waynesboro, Williamsburg, Winchester, Wytheville, and Yorktown Virginia.  Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® Birdwire® Shock Track® Flex Track® is easily customized to exclude problem sparrows while accommodating demanding architectural specifications. Your Wildlife Professionals, Inc. has been controlling and removing starlings in Virginia since 1998 using Bird Barrier® America products.

Your Wildlife Professional will design a starling control or removal program that best fits your needs, project specifications, architectural plans, and most importantly your budget. Understanding a starling's biology or behavioral patterns, size, and reproductive rates are the most important factors in determining the proper bird control product to use. Some bird control products are species-specific, while others can deter a range of species. We prefer to use the product that will deter starlings, as well as, other species of birds that may move in after the starlings are removed. starlings are not protected in Virginia or by the federal government, which means that we can remove the starlings and their nests at any time of the year.

Starling Identification:

Starlings are an introduced species to America and have adapted well to urban life which offers abundant nesting and food sites. The starling is a dark, chunky, muscular bird that is distinguished from other balckbird species by its short tail and longer, slender bill. In the winter starlings showcase a highly speckled, irridescent coat, while in the summer their plumage is much duller brown/black with less speckles. Starlings gather in massive flocks (some numbering tens of thousands) and these aggressive birds will drive out other native bird species often taking over the other birds' existing nests.

Damage Caused by Starlings:

When starlings are in their flocking phase, thousands of these pest birds can literally overwhelm trees or buildings in an area. Typical starling problems are large scale buildup of their sprayed feces (a whitewash look) which can lead to structural damage, as the uric acid in the pest bird droppings can corrode stone, metal and masonry. Machinery and drainage problems occur from starling nesting materials and bird droppings. In addition, the bacteria, fungal agents and ectoparasites found in starling droppings and nesting materials are responsible for a host of serious diseases, including histoplasmosis, encephalitis, salmonella, meningitis, toxoplasmosis and more. The large quantity of starling droppings can open a company up to slip and fall liability if not properly cleaned up. Many companies also retain significant clean up and maintenance costs due to starling problems that are not resolved. Agriculture often has starling problems as these problem birds will eat small seedlings and damage crops.

Starling Control:
The best starling control product is 3/4” StealthNet® bird netting. StealthNet® is extremely durable and creates a true bird barrier. Bird netting permantently resolves starling problems, keeping these problem birds completely away from the area.

In addition to StealthNet® bird net, another effective starling control product is an electrical Shock Track® Flex Track® product as these pest birds are generally to nimble for most traditional mechanical ledge products. Shock Track® Flex Track® electrical bird track is particularly useful for starling control on building ledges. A new technique for starling bird control that has found some success is fogging with methyl anthranilate, a grape extract that reacts with the birds olfactory sense like pepper spray.

Virginia Swallow Identification, Deterrent, Removal, and Control

Toll Free 855-945-3776

Your Wildlife Professionals, Inc. has been controlling and removing barn swallows in Virginia since 1998 using Bird Barrier® America products.

Your Wildlife Professional will design a swallow control or removal program that best fits your needs, project specifications, architectural plans, and most importantly your budget. Understanding a barn swallows biology or behavioral patterns, size, and reproductive rates is the most important factor in determining the proper bird control product to use. Some bird control products are species-specific, while others can deter a range of species. We prefer to use the product that will deter swallows, as well as, other species of birds that may move in after the swallows are removed. Barn swallows are protected in Virginia and by the federal government, which means that we cannot remove the swallows or their nests at any time of the year.

Swallow Identification
Barn swallows are slender, sleek birds that spend their spring and summers in North America. Swallows are very territorial and will return to the same nesting site year after year. Building eaves, building trusses, loading docks, residential decks, and other structures often replace cliffs these days to build their distinctive mud pellet nests (see photos to the right). Swallows have brownish red faces and throats with steel blue coats and light colored bellies. barn swallows have long forked tails (see right bottom photo). Young swallows have similar coloring, but lighter.

Damage Caused by Swallows
Swallows are often a nuisance in suburban areas as they build their mud nests that damage and deface the outer walls and eaves of residences and office buildings. Swallow feces often end up on the sides of buildings and the ground below from the colony of birds in residence. Building owners report extra clean up costs and concern over slip and fall liability from swallow dropping buildup, plus an unclean, dirty company image. The bacteria, fungal agents and parasites found in swallow droppings and nests can carry a host of serious diseases, including histoplasmosis, encephalitis, salmonella, meningitis, toxoplasmosis and more.

Swallow Control
These small, nimble birds enjoy special legal protection, as mentioned above. Once they have laid their eggs in the nest, you CANNOT disturb them. You must wait until they leave for their winter homes to remove the nests and then exclude them.

Two products work well for getting rid of swallows. First is to use 3/4 inch Stealthnet® bird netting installed along the underside of the eaves at an angle or a horizontal net adjacent to the ceiling to prevent them from building their nests there the following year.

Another option is to install BirdSlide®. BirdSlide® cuts off the angle between the ceiling and the wall, but it is made of U.V. stabilized polycarbonate that can be painted to color match your structure and blend seamlessly when installed properly.

Your Wildlife Professionals, Inc., can design a swallow control, swallow removal, or get rid of swallows by installing Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® or BirdSlide® to remove pest swallows in the counties, cities and towns of Alexandria, Arlington, Bedford, Blacksburg, Bristol, Charlottesville, Covington, Chesapeake, Danville, DC, District of Columbia, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Loudon, Manassas, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton, Virginia Beach, Washington D.C., Waynesboro, Williamsburg, Winchester, Wytheville, and Yorktown Virginia.  Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® or BirdSlide® is easily customized to exclude problem swallows while accommodating demanding architectural specifications. • Corporate picnic areas
  • Golf Courses

"To be effective, a chemical repellent must affect the way that the bird perceives the crop."

-Michael L. Avery, National Wildlife Research Center, Gainesville, FL

FlightControl® PLUS works in two ways

  1. Anti-feedant (consequence): Geese experience a temporary but very effective digestive irritation, usually within 20 minutes, when they eat turf treated with FlightControl® PLUS.
  2. Visual Warning (threat): Geese have four retinal cones (unlike humans, who have three) and have the unique ability to recognize FlightControl® PLUS in the ultraviolet light spectrum in addition to the visible light spectrum in which humans see. The appearance of turf treated with FlightControl® PLUS is unnatural and, once conditioned to the digestive reaction, the visual signal of the treated turf provides a warning to the geese not to eat the turf.
Studies have shown that birds will refuse to eat food treated with the active ingredient in FlightControl® PLUS once they are conditioned.

What will the geese do after I treat my turf with FlightControl® PLUS?

  • Geese will sample the area. They may react by shaking their heads, drinking water, pecking at their bellies and rubbing their necks. (20 minutes for response time).
  • As the geese sample, the conditioning process begins.
  • Geese will not die as a result of eating FlightControl® PLUS.
  • They may feed several times, drinking in between, while being conditioned to respond.
  • Geese will learn that a treated area is not a good place to feed.
  • Geese have no choice but to find an alternative food source. This conditioning usually takes one to two days.
  • New droppings should decrease, and existing droppings will continue to age if allowed to remain in the drop zone turf, turning white with age.

Other Goose Removal Options

Virginia Goose Round UpThere are three other options that can be effective in removing resident Canada geese, habitat modification, physical removal, and harassment.  A permit through U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services is needed in order for anybody to remove Canada geese because they are still considered a migratory bird.  Federal law prohibits individuals from possessing, transporting or handling migratory birds without a permit.  The most common technique used in physically removing geese is a round-up.  Round-ups are typically performed in June or July when the geese are in their summer molt.  At this time the geese cannot fly and will congregate in large numbers close to water to easily escape danger.  Their inability to fly makes capture into funnel like traps easy.  The second method is harassment.  Harassment is the first method that must be tried before actual physical removal can be used.  There are a number of ways to harass geese, but the most effective is a trained dog that patrols the area and that will chase the geese away.  Habitat modification can be very effective if the end result makes the areas that the geese reside in less desirable to them for food and nesting.

Your Wildlife Pros, can design a goose control, goose removal, or get rid of geese by treating the turf area with FlightControl® PLUS to remove pest geese in the counties, cities and towns of Alexandria, Arlington, Bedford, Blacksburg, Bristol, Charlottesville, Covington, Chesapeake, Danville, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Loudon, Manassas, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton, Virginia Beach, Waynesboro, Williamsburg, Winchester, Wytheville, and Yorktown Virginia.  For a FlightControl® PLUS treatment quote or other goose removal options, please contact Your Wildlife Professionals, Inc. for a bird consultation.

Virginia Chimney Swift Identification, Deterrent, Removal, & Control

540-940-6489

Your Wildlife Pros has been controlling and removing chimney swifts from residential and commercial chimneys in Virginia since 1998.

Virginia Chimney Swift RemovalYour Wildlife Pro will recommend a chimney swift control or removal program that best fits your needs and most importantly your budget. Understanding chimney swift biology or behavioral patterns, size, and reproductive rates are the most important factors in determining the proper bird control method.  Standard and custom chimney caps are our go to product that will control chimney swifts after they migrate in the fall, without having to physical remove them from your chimney. Chimney swifts are migratory birds that are protected in Virginia and by the federal government, which means that we cannot remove the chimney swifts during the nesting period or while flightless young are in your chimney.

Chimney swifts are gregarious birds that build their half-cup-shaped mud nests on the inside surfaces of residential chimney flues (As seen in the picture to the right.) and the smoke-shelf area above fire places, as well as the large boiler smoke stacks of industrial and older institutional-style buildings (in which they may nest by the hundreds). In numbers, their nests may reduce the drafting efficiency of a flue while fires are burning in the fireplace. Chimney swift chicks are very vocal when adults return to the nests with food. The raspy "chitter-chitter" sounds that frequently emanate from the fireplace are often annoying and disturbing to homeowners during the 14 to 18 days that the chicks are in the nest.

Habitat Modification
Since chimney swifts feed on flying insects while in-flight high above the tree tops, little can be done to prevent a population of these birds from returning to a locality that is favored, year after year.

Removal
Chimney swifts are protected in Virginia and federally under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and, while the nests contain eggs and young, cannot be removed or disturbed without a depredation permit issued by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.  Obtaining this permit is timely and by time you get the permit the chimney swifts will have migrated south for the winter.

Control
After the young have left the nest(s) in late fall (Usually by October.), contact us to install standard or custom chimney caps to prevent these birds from entering and building new nests the following spring.

Your Wildlife Pros, provides chimney swift control, chimney swift removal, birds in chimney removal, or can get rid of chimney swifts by installing custom or standard chimney caps in the fall of the year in the counties, cities and towns of Alexandria, Arlington, Bedford, Blacksburg, Bristol, Charlottesville, Covington, Chesapeake, Danville, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Loudon, Manassas, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton, Virginia Beach, Waynesboro, Williamsburg, Winchester, Wytheville, and Yorktown Virginia.  For chimney swift control options, please contact Your Wildlife Professionals, Inc. for a bird consultation.

Virginia Vulture Identification, Deterrent, Removal, & Control

540-940-6489

Blue Ridge Wildlife & Pest Management has been controlling and removing Vultures in Virginia since 1998 using Bird Barrier® America products.

Your Wildlife Pro will design a Vulture control or removal program that best fits your needs, project specifications, architectural plans, and most importantly your budget. Understanding the vulture biology or behavioral patterns, size, and reproductive rates are the most important factors in determining the proper bird control product to use. Some bird control products are species-specific, while others can deter a range of species. We prefer to use the product that will deter vultures, as well as, other species of birds that may move in after the vultures are removed. Vultures are protected in Virginia and by the federal government, which means that we cannot remove the vultures or their nests at any time of the year.

Turkey or Black Vulture Identification:
Vultures are large birds with dark feathers, weighing up to six pounds with a wingspan up to 32 inches long. They have a bald head with reddish skin similar in look to a turkey (turkey vulture) or a black head (black vulture) that enables them to forage in dead carcassess as these birds are scavengers that are particularly fond of carrion. Often seen in flocks of 70 or more birds, vultures love to roost in towers and rooftops. These long-lived birds (about 20 years) are found all across tVirginia in the spring and summer.

Damage Caused by Vultures:
Vultures cause problems by attacking rooftops, caulking and other exterior surfaces, causing extensive bird damage to structures. The bird droppings from vultures are large as well, creating extra clean up costs and concern over slip and fall liability from vulture dropping buildup, plus an unclean, dirty company image. The bacteria, fungal agents and parasites found in vulture droppings and nests can carry a host of serious diseases, including histoplasmosis, encephalitis, salmonella, meningitis, toxoplasmosis and more. As an unpleasant bonus, vultures often leave bones and carcasses to feed on around their roosting areas. They are also known to be noisy problem birds, especially in a large group or fighting over food.

Vulture Control:
All vultures are protected by law under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act so humane vulture control methods must be used to move them.  Vultures are heaavy, aggressive birds that can destroy most standard bird control products. The most effective bird control methods to get rid of vultures are Bird Barrier® Shock Track® Flex Track® electrified bird track. Shock Track® Flex Track® will protect against vulture problems like roosting on roof parapets or girders and can dissuade vultures from landing in flat, open areas.

Your Wildlife Pro, can design a vulture control, vulture removal, or get rid of vultures  with Bird Barrier® Shock Track® Flex Track® to remove pest vultures in the counties, cities and towns of Alexandria, Arlington, Bedford, Blacksburg, Bristol, Charlottesville, Covington, Chesapeake, Danville, DC, District of Columbia, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Loudon, Manassas, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton, Virginia Beach, Washington D.C., Waynesboro, Williamsburg, Winchester, Wytheville, and Yorktown Virginia.  Bird Barrier® Shock Track® Flex Track® is easily customized to exclude problem vultures while accommodating demanding architectural specifications. Your Wildlife Professionals, Inc. has been controlling and removing woodpeckers in Virginia since 1998 using Bird Barrier® America products.

Your Wildlife Professional will design a woodpecker control or removal program that best fits your needs and most importantly your budget. Understanding a woodpeckers biology or behavioral patterns, size, and reproductive rates are the most important factors in determining the proper bird control product to use. Some bird control products are species-specific, while others can deter a range of species. We prefer to use the product that will deter woodpeckers, as well as, other species of birds that may move in after the woodpeckers are removed. Woodpeckers are protected in Virginia and by the federal government, which means that we cannot remove the woodpeckers or their nests at any time of the year.

Woodpecker Identification
There are over 2000 species of woodpeckers, ranging from 7 to 15 inches in length, and usually with brightly contrasting coloration. Most males have some red on the head and many species have black and white marks. Woodpeckers have short legs with two sharp-clawed, backward-pointed toes and stiff tail feathers, which serve as a supportive prop. They primarily feed on tree-living or wood-boring insects using their strong beak and long tongue to dislodge food. Some members of the Woodpecker family (Flickers) feed on insects off the ground, while others prefer native berries, fruit and nuts.

Damage Caused by Woodpecker Problems
Pecking or “drumming” against trees or buildings is the characteristic most associated with Woodpeckers. They do this to establish territories and to attract or signal mates. This can be quite annoying for humans, especially in the early morning when trying to sleep. Woodpeckers can also cause significant damage to the sides of buildings, telephone poles, eaves, fences, etc., by pecking holes into the surface. The holes are usually caused by 1 or 2 birds during the spring time mating season.

Woodpecker Control
All Woodpeckers are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and control methods must not harm the birds.

The most effective control method is 3/4” StealthNet® bird netting. StealthNet® bird net is extremely durable and can be installed in a semi-permanent configuration until woodpecker nesting behavior has been permanently modified.  The most widely used method is to fill the holes and hang Scare Eye Balloons in the areas the woodpeckers are working.

If we find that the woodpeckers are after an insect that is living in the wood of your home we can treat the wood to kill the insects and fill the holes to restore your home to its original look or remove the damaged wood and replace it.

Your Wildlife Professionals, Inc., can design a woodpecker control, woodpecker removal, or get rid of woodpeckers along with Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® or Scare Eye Balloons to remove pest woodpeckers in the counties, cities and towns of Alexandria, Arlington, Bedford, Blacksburg, Bristol, Charlottesville, Covington, Chesapeake, Danville, DC, District of Columbia, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Loudon, Manassas, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton, Virginia Beach, Washington D.C., Waynesboro, Williamsburg, Winchester, Wytheville, and Yorktown Virginia.  Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® or Scare Eye Balloons are easily customized to exclude problem woodpeckers.  For woodpecker design, removal, and control options, please contact Your Wildlife Professionals, Inc. for a bird consultation.

Sea Gull Identification:
Sea gulls are intelligent birds existing in great numbers along coastal areas, as well as inland lakes and rivers. Gulls can drink either salt or freshwater and their scavenger diets allow them great adaptability. Sea gulls eat anything from dead fish and garbage to field mice and insects. The typical gull is somewhere between 18 to 24 inches tall, weighing about 2 to 3 pounds. Their generally light colored in body with black wing tips and a deep black to light gray mantle. Coloring can change between season depending on the species. Gulls enjoy protection at the federal, state and local levels, mandating humane control practices. They prefer open water and secluded breeding areas, causing winter migrations in some northern territories, although southern gulls remain resident birds year round.

Damage Caused by Sea Gulls:
Gull control problems often occur at dump sites due to the food opportunities present, as well as at harbors and pier areas, especially where fishing boats bring in their catches. Flocks of gulls often create hazardous conditions to low flying aircraft and can cause bird strikes around airports. Large buildup of gull droppings leads to structural damage from the uric acid in the bird droppings. This is often seen on boats, streetlights and coastal rooftops. Other sea gull problems include slip and fall liability from dropping buildup, plus an unclean, dirty company image. The bacteria, fungal agents and ectoparasites found in gull droppings can carry a host of serious diseases, including histoplasmosis, encephalitis, salmonella, meningitis, toxoplasmosis and more. Many companies also retain significant clean up costs due to gull problems they don't resolve, as well as customer complaints from the noise and aggressive nature of the gulls.

Sea Gull Control:
Physical barriers can be erected to deter gulls from entering an area. Overhead wire grids or large mesh Bird Barrier® Stealthnet® (4 inch) bird netting can be installed over dump sites, aquacultures, ponds, courtyards and other large, open outdoor areas to prevent the soaring gulls from landing. Bird Barrier® Shock Track® Flex Track® electrical bird track is effective at deterring problem sea gulls when installed around building perimeters and on ledges. Daddi Long Legs, a unique and humane physical bird barrier, is effective at dissuading gulls from landing on silos, street lights, A/C units, outdoor umbrellas and large flat rooftops.

Virginia Bird Barrier® BirdSlide® Bird Deterrent

540-940-6489

BirdSlide® is a very low-profile bird deterrent that deters all problem birds including: swallows, pigeons, starlings, sparrows, seagulls, etc. BirdSlide is designed for use on ledges in heavy bird pressure (nesting birds) and bird netting or other products are visually unacceptable. BirdSlide completely denies the problem birds access to the ledge; they simply cannot get a grip and 'slide' right off.

Bird Barrier Bird Slide VirginiaThe BirdSlide® bird repeller is designed to disappear. This bird barrier comes in standard grey or beige colors, but can be color matched to blend seamlessly with the building. The bird deterrent literally looks like a planned part of the structure.

Target Pest Birds Deterred: Pigeons, swallows, gulls, crows, vultures, sparrows, starlings, and all other problem bird species

Install BirdSlide® bird deterrent: On ledges, eaves, angle irons, I-beams, and most "L" shaped ledges where total bird exclusion is the goal.

Material: U.V. Stabilized polycarbonate

Advantages of BirdSlide®:

  • Very discreet; nearly invisible bird deterrent
  • Deters pigeons, gulls, crows, sparrows, starlings, swallows and other problem birds on almost any architectural configuration
  • Gets rid of evening roosting and nesting problem birds
  • Durable materials warranted to protect building for a minimum of five years from bird problems
  • Can be color matched to blend perfectly and look like a planned architectural detail.

How It Works: When BirdSlide® bird deterrent is installed on a ledge, it effectively blocks access to the ledge completely. By creating a 45 degree angle on the ledge, the birds cannot gain a foothold at all. For swallow control, the BirdSlide is installed upside down underneath eaves, cutting off the angle the swallows desire between the eave and the structure itself.

There are many species of birds that can be considered nuisance birds in Virginia. European starlings, pigeons, English sparrows, barn swallows, geese, chimney swifts, vultures, and woodpeckers are just the most common nuisance birds that we deal with regularly.

Bird droppings and nesting debris will streak and stain anything they land on as well as accumulate upon walkways and loading areas below their roosts, which can create a slipping and or health hazard.

Bird infestations leave an unkempt appearance as well as create a health and safety concern to anybody coming into direct contact with the fecal and nesting materials.

Bird droppings are very acidic in nature and will damage any surface upon which they accumulate.  The droppings are also a breeding medium for numerous insects and fungus.  Bird lice, or more correctly, mites are commonly associated with birds. Bird mites are a blood-sucking parasite of these pest birds and become a problem with people when they are unable to get food, once they are separated from their host.

When birds leave their nests permanently, get trapped in the wall cavities or die, the bird mites leave the nest in search of a new host. Their route of travel is usually down wall cavities or through ventilation ducts into rooms. They can only survive two to three weeks without a feed from their usual host.

Many birds may use the interior of your structure and or portions of buildings to nest and roost if an opportunity is provided. Openings to exhaust vents, around utilities entering the structure, chimneys, lofts, steeples, eaves or old cracks or holes can be blocked with a variety of materials such as: wire mesh, wood, sheet metal, vinyl siding, or other solid construction materials to prevent birds from entering.

Your Wildlife Professionals staff are specially trained and certified in Bird Control, Bird Removal, Trapping Birds and all other types of Animal Control and Animal Removal. We'll perform Bird Control and Bird Removal in an environmentally conscious and humane way to your home or building in order to illuminate all the entry, roosting, loafing, and nesting areas permanently.

Our bird control services are guaranteed and warranted for 1 to 10 years depending on the technique and the materials used to solve your bird problem.

If you are in need of Bird Control to get rid of birds in Virginia, contact Your Wildlife Professionals today. Nuisance problems from birds will get worse if left alone. Our bird control specialist will be able to use a variety of tools and professional methods like bird spikes, bird deterrents, bird repellents, bird wires, bird netting, and may also perform bird trapping, roost removal, population control, baiting, or total bird removal as well. Bird control is a very involved process and may include one or more of these bird proofing solutions.

There are many varieties of structural bird control products. Different bird control products work for different birds under different situations. One important item to note is bird pressure, that is, how determined a bird is to remain in the area. Some products will not work for nesting or roosting bird problems because the bird is too determined to stay there and will find a way to defeat the product. Here is a brief definition of bird pressure:

Heavy Pressure: The bird is nesting or roosting at this site and there is generally a food or water source nearby.
Medium Pressure: This is most likely a food or afternoon resting site, but they do not nest or roost there.
Light Pressure: There is no food source or sheltered area at site and the birds stop there briefly during the day.

Once you have determined the bird pressure at your problem site, you can select the product that works best for your bird problem, your bird species and your aesthetic tastes. All of the structural bird control products listed below humanely deter problem birds. Click on the bird control product name for more detailed information on each product. A quick reference sheet of problem birds and the bird control products that work best for each problem area is available here.
